A Topaz FAQ
  • Topaz ranges in color from faint yellow to deep brown. Colorless topaz is also common; the most popular shade is brown with a reddish tint (shown here).

  • Pink, green, and other colors of topaz are usually made from heat-treated brown stones.
  • Blue topaz is almost always made by irradiating brown topaz. Pale blue shades occur naturally in ore deposits, but are rare.
  • Topaz is a hard stone, but in mineral terms has a “perfect cleavage,” which makes it vulnerable to breaks and splits if hit on a hard surface.
  • Untreated pink and red are the most valuable shades of topaz, but light brown stones are quite often heated to show a pink color. If you're thinking of buying pink topaz, ask the seller whether it's natural or heat-treated. Both are beautiful, but only one is worth the extra cost.
  • Mystic topaz is made from heat-treated clear topaz that is coated with titanium oxide. It has a deep, shimmery tone with all the colors of the rainbow.
  • Topaz gemstones range in size from tiny crystals to large rocks. The biggest uncut stone was found in Brazil and weighs nearly 600 pounds; it's on display at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC.
  • Care for your topaz as you would opals or pearls; clean only with mild soap and water, and dry with a soft cloth.
Thank you to everyone who came out to drink a toast to my first anniversary; it was wonderful! Now I'm hard at work on the repairs everyone brought me, as well as more new designs.
